Tomas Kara
Skills/Experience
Dr. Tomáš Kára (born 1967) completed his medical studies at the Medical Faculty of Masaryk University in Brno. During his studies he was a member of Czech National Rowing Team (including participation at World University Games and World Rowing Championships). Dr. Kara finished his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiology at St. Anne’s University Hospital. During his fellowship and residency Dr. Kara was actively involved in clinical research, including novel technologeis development, focused mostly on development of novel risk factor and methods for early diagnostic and individual treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In 2000, Dr. Kara received in Washington DC Young Investigator Award of North American Society for Pacing and Electrophysiology (now Heart Rhythm Society) for his work dedicated to discovery of novel pathophysiological mechanism of vasovagal syncope. Upon this Award, Dr. Kara received invitation from Prof. Virend Somers for research fellowship at Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory at Mayo Clinic, where he worked permanently between 2001-2004. In 2004 Dr. Kara returned back to St. Anne’s Hospital to continue his clinical research, keeping his collaboration with the Mayo Clinic via part-time research appointment. During his fellowship at Mayo, Dr. Kara completed PhD studies and reeached the position of Assistant Professor of Medicine. In 2007 he was named as Associated Professor of Medicine in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
For his scientific work, Dr. Kara was awarded in 2007 the prestigious Mayo Clinic Outstanding Research Award. Together with his mentor Prof. Virend Somers, both of these investigators were instrumental in developing the concept of the International Clinical Research Center and in establishing a scientific collaboration between both institutions, including an intensive educational program and scientists exchange visit. Dr. Kara also has extensive experience in novel technologies development, intellectual property protection and has a good track record in publishing his scientific results in leading medical journals such as Circulation, Annals of Internal Medicine, Journal of American College of Cardiology and others.
Role in the Project

- Host the IIIOS training event - Basics on diagnosis and therapy of cardiovascular disease
